A prototype of the new Mercedes E-Class has been spotted testing ahead of a possible reveal in 2023. Read on for all you need to know about this all-new executive car

  • New Mercedes E-Class Estate spotted
  • Styling cues from the S-Class
  • Saloon version also spied
  • Updated infotainment expected
  • Plug-in hybrid likely
  • On sale in 2023

The new Mercedes E-Class Estate has been spotted testing out on the road wearing a pretty thin disguise. This new family wagon is likely to get plug-in hybrid engines, as well as new infotainment tech.

The alternative to the Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series has also been spotted in saloon form, and both versions are expected to go on sale in 2023.

The new Mercedes E-Class isn’t that well covered when you consider this is a prototype, and you can clearly see the influence of the larger S-Class in the styling.

You can just about make out the slim LED headlamps up front, mimicking those of the S-Class. You can also see the same wide grille design you get on other Mercedes models.

Looking down the side, you can see it retains a similar profile to the current E-Class Estate. It’s not as swoopy as the BMW 5 Series Touring, and the new car will also get the same flush-fitting door handles found on other models such as the Mercedes EQS and S-Class.

The back of the car is the most well covered part, however it looks as though the new car will get some LED rear lights and a slightly sportier bumper than the current E-Class.

The Mercedes E-Class saloon was also spotted earlier this year at the Nurburgring. It gets the same design treatment as the estate up front, and the side profile remains similar to the curvy shape of the current E-Class. There won’t be any coupe or cabriolet versions like you get with the current car, that’ll be reserved for the forthcoming Mercedes CLE.

New Mercedes E-Class interior and infotainment

No images have surfaced of the new Mercedes E-Class’ interior, but you can expect it to echo that of the S-Class.

This will likely mean a large new screen angled on the dashboard and a more minimalist design.

New Mercedes E-Class engines

Mercedes hasn’t announced any engines for the new E-Class yet, but it’s a safe bet that there will be a selection of petrol and diesel models available, all with mild hybrid assistance for more efficiency. High-performance AMG versions will come later on. No electric model here though, that’s reserved for the Mercedes EQE.

A plug-in hybrid model is also highly likely and may share parts with the recently revealed Mercedes GLC. This would mean a 2.0-litre petrol engine and a 31kWh battery, providing as much as 75 miles of pure electric range.

New Mercedes E-Class price and release date

There’s a little while to go yet before the new Mercedes E-Class is revealed, so no pricing has been announced yet. It’s safe to say that it will be more than the current car, probably around the £45,000 mark.

Mercedes only recently updated the current E-Class, so don’t expect to see this new one revealed until around 2023.

Will there be a 2023 E

The all-new 2023 model won't come in two-door cabriolet and coupe bodystyles, with Mercedes sticking to saloon and estate for the E-Class but launching the CLE to cover off the two-door bodystyles.

Is there a new E

The current E-Class arrived for the 2017 model year and was given a mid-cycle update for 2021. In Mercedes tradition, the redesigned E-Class should arrive in 2023 as a 2024 model. It appears the design is taking on a more dynamic look, as the roof line looks a little more sloped at the rear than on the current model.

Will E

The luxury brand this year confirmed it will stop selling the entry-level A-Class sedan in the U.S after 2022. It is also dropping the S-Class coupe. At its national dealer meeting late last month, Mercedes said it will replace the C-Class and E-Class coupes with a new two-door CLE nameplate.

Will there be a 2023 E

The wide-ranging E-Class line, which includes a standard sedan, coupe, cabriolet, and wagon plus AMG performance versions, has only mild changes for 2023. Metallic paint is now standard on the E 450 4Matic sedan and all variants of the E-Class coupe, cabriolet, all-terrain, and wagon, including AMGs.
