What CoD is coming out in 2023?

Call of Duty 2023 may have been delayed, but as Activision publishes its latest earnings report, predicting large-scale success for both Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2, the studio also says that additional CoD content will nevertheless still arrive next year.

Reports from February claimed that Activision had officially delayed the launch of a Call of Duty game in 2023, citing both the underperformance of Call of Duty: Vanguard, and developer Treyarch moving to assist development of an upcoming free-to-play game as reasons to forego an annual CoD instalment for the first time since 2004. Warzone 2, the new version of Activision’s flagship battle royale, is expected to launch in 2022, with Modern Warfare 2 already confirmed for October 28. In its latest earnings call however, Activision says that more Call of Duty content is planned for the immediate future, including 2023.

“Anticipation is high for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, planned for release on console and PC on October 28,” the company says. “An all-new Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 experience, tightly integrated with the premium game, will launch as an extension of the Modern Warfare universe later this year.

“Across the Call of Duty ecosystem, the teams are well positioned to support these launches with substantial live operations while also continuing development of new premium content planned for 2023 and beyond.”

“Premium content” could refer to several different possibilities, including new game modes for Warzone, DLC for Modern Warfare 2, or simply additional weapons, skins, and other update content across the expanding CoD universe. “Premium” however suggests that whatever Activision is planning, it isn’t going to be free, hinting that the content for Call of Duty 2023 may be more substantial than cosmetics and perks. Perhaps the zombies mode for Modern Warfare 2 will be a paid expansion, or maybe, if you’re a wild optimist, the plans to cancel CoD 2023 have been reversed, and there will be a new Call of Duty game next year after all. Either way, the CoD roadmap is looking pretty populated for the near future, with the increasingly fierce and competitive Warzone demanding you pay special attention to getting the best sniper rifle and best loadout.

With Modern Warfare 2, Warzone 2.0, and more on the horizon, some players are unsure of what to expect from Activision’s FPS series in 2023. Here, we run through what we know and what Call of Duty fans should expect.

Call of Duty has long followed a concrete release cycle, with a new installment dropping in every year’s final quarter for as long as fans can remember. That will be the same in 2022, with Modern Warfare 2 chalked to drop on October 28.

However, matters are already confused by the upcoming release of Warzone 2.0, which is slated for release in mid-November.

As a result, players are asking whether there’ll be a new Call of Duty in 2023.

Is there a new CoD in 2023?

Right now, we do not expect a new Call of Duty title to be released in fall 2023.

Activision are yet to officially confirm this, but all leaks and rumors surrounding Modern Warfare 2 state that it will have a series-first two-year life cycle.

Similarly, Warzone 2 is expected to have a life cycle much longer than a year. The first BR released in March 2020 and is only being phased out in favor of its sequel two and a half years later.

These rumors appear to have been confirmed by industry insider Jason Schreier who, on October 10, reported again that there’ll be no new CoD until 2024.

“Next year they’ll be selling new stuff for MW2,” he said. “[It’ll be] an expansion or something like that (not sure exactly what it’ll look like but it’ll have campaign stuff too). No actual new COD until 2024 as I reported earlier this year.”

Modern Warfare 2 is expected to be fans’ only new release for two years.

Expected Call of Duty developers and release timeline

Because of the longer life cycle, we expect a massive amount of post-launch content for both Warzone 2.0 and Modern Warfare 2. Leaks have even claimed that, during MW2’s life cycle, it will receive a ‘greatest hits map pack’ as DLC.

CoD 2024 is expected to be developed by Treyarch, perhaps set in the 1990s, and, according to leaks, be released alongside a new Warzone 2.0 battle royale map.

CoD 2025 is then expected to be developed by Sledgehammer Games and is rumored to be a sequel to 2014’s Advanced Warfare.

There is also the potential for a remaster of an old CoD title. We’ve seen the original Modern Warfare remastered, as well as a reskinned campaign for Modern Warfare 2.

Rumors continue to swirl over the potential of a Modern Warfare 3 Remastered, with some leaks claiming it is “waiting” to drop.

In short, whilst a CoD 2023 looks unlikely, there’s an awful lot for fans of the franchise to get excited for.
