The VMware client must be installed on your local system before you connect to a virtual machine.  Instructions to manually install the VMware Client for Windows XP users can be found here.

Download the appropriate version for your operating system

Windows Client 32 bit: VMware-viewclient-4.6.0-366101.exe

Windows Client 64 bit: VMware-viewclient-x86_64-4.6.0-366101.exe

Click on the link above to download the client.

Save the client to a convenient location.

Run the file you just downloaded and follow the installation prompts.

The following settings are recommended:

  • Custom Setup: Install View Client and USB Redirection

  • Default View Connection Server: BingView.binghamton.edu

  • Check the options for: Create Program Shortcuts

  • Uncheck Launch VMware View Client after the installation is completed

Click Install to finish the installation.

Note:  The BingView Portal does not support the Windows 7 operating system.  You must use the VMware client to directly connect to the remote Virtual machine.  The procedure for connecting the View portal from off campus is outlined below.

Connecting Windows 7 to a Virtual Machine

After the VMware view client has been installed you are ready to connect to the View Portal.  This procedure is valid only for Windows based system.

If you are connecting from a system located on the campus network you can skip to step 2.

Step 1.

Connect to : http://ssl.binghamton.edu

Login with the appropriate credentials.

If this is the first time logging into this system, install any plug-in and/or software that is presented.

Start the "Network Connect" option from the SSL web page.

If this is the first time running the Network Connect option, install any plug-in and/or software that is presented

Once the Network Connect option has started successfully, there should be a orange colored closed lock located on lower right corner of the task bar.  The closed lock indicates that a secure network connection has been established between your system and the campus network.  Without this secure connection the Virtual Desktop will not function correctly.

Step 2.

Start the VMware View Client

Set the connection server to: bingview.binghamton.edu and click connect

Click OK on the View Portal informational message.

Login with your Pods or BGM account.

The View VMware View Client lists the various Virtual Machine Workstations that are available for use.

Select the desired Display option.
Available options are:

  •  Full Screen
  • Multiple Monitors
  • Windows

Select the desired desktop.

The system automatically logs you onto the selected desktop.  It authenticates you to the desktop using the credentials used to login to the View Portal.

Your local disc are automatically mapped to the virtual machine.  Files should be saved to your mapped drives.  Files saved to the virtual machine drives are deleted once your session is terminated.

When finished be sure to Log Off.

How to Install Windows XP Professional 64 Bit SP1 on Windows 10 using VM Workstation 16

As you know, Windows XP was a popular operating system at the time. Microsoft completely ended support for XP in 2014. Therefore, it would be a logical choice to use an up-to-date operating system such as Windows 10 on your host computer.

However, since the automation machines used in some institutions or organizations were produced in an old date, they need Windows XP or an older operating system in order to be managed. In case of such a need, it is recommended to run systems such as XP on desktop or laptop computers with old hardware.

If you do not have an old computer, you can of course use old operating systems on virtual machines using virtualization software such as VMware on your current computer.

Or, as we mentioned, if you still want to use Windows XP even though it is an old system, you can install this system on the virtual machine after you install a virtualization program such as VMware, VirtualBox, or Hyper-V on your Windows 10 computer.

How to Create a New Virtual Machine for Windows XP

Before proceeding with the installation steps, you need to install the VMware virtualization program on your computer. After installation, download the Windows XP ISO file for VMware to your host computer by clicking the button below and create a new VM by following the steps below.

Windows XP Pro x86/x64 SP1 ISO + SP2 Installer

   Step 1

After installing VMware Workstation 16 Pro on your computer, run the program and click Create a New Virtual Machine on its homepage to set up a new virtual machine, and when the VM wizard opens, tick Custom (Advanced) and click the Next button.

Also, you may see the warning that XP cannot be installed on the NVMe disk. NVMe is supported by current operating systems as it is a new disk controller.
