2023 Audi A5 is one of a dwindling number of premium 2+2 compact coupes on offer in 2023. Its main rival is the BMW 4 Series, with the Infiniti Q60 and Lexus RC completing the segment.

The A5 is powered by a relatively beefy 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 261 horsepower. That boom is sent via an eight-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels via Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive system.

The current generation A5 has been on sale since 2018 and has received a heavy facelift which gives it a more aggressive exterior look and (finally) a touchscreen that rises above the center console and controls the car’s infotainment system.

By 2023, we expect nothing to change, with the powertrain, interior, and exterior options remaining largely untouched.

The A5 is a solid, easy-to-use personal coupe that’s perfect for buyers who need no more than a room for themselves and their passengers. There are also sportier versions of the A5 on offer — the S5 and RS5 — but the performance gains are offset by serious price increases.

If you want something sleek, comfortable, and full of technology, consider the A5. Be aware that you will be short on storage space and space in the back seat.

2023 Audi A5 Review: Audi A5 Next Generation

The Audi A5 received several updates and new features that come as standard or are available for the 2023 model year. Audi is reportedly looking to present itself as a leader in the luxury segment with its quality and technology in the 2023 lineup.

2023 Audi A5 refresh

Some of the upgrades to the A5 model line include standard matrix design LED headlights. The Premium Plus trim on all A5 and S5 models include a Bang & Olufsen sound system with 3D sound.

Now standard on the A5 Coupe, A5 Cabriolet, and A5 Sportback 45 are 18-inch 5-double-spoke design wheels. The Black optical package on the A5 Coupe and Sportback 45 now comes with more black features, such as a rear lip spoiler and exhaust tips.

Similarly, the Black S5 Coupe and Sportback optical package in Premium Plus and Prestige trim also now has a black rear lip spoiler and exhaust tip, as well as black Audi rings and badges.

The 2023 Audi A5 Cabriolet A5 now has an S-line exterior, gray oak inlay, flared door sill inlay, and sports front seats as standard. The S5 gets an Audi Sport interior package which is available with a black interior, red contrast stitching, and RS carbon inlay.

Lastly, there is a color update. Chronos gray replaced Quantum gray for the A5 Coupe, Sportback 45, Cabriolet, and S models. Blue Ascari was added while Sonoma green and Blue Turbo were removed from the RS 5 Coupe and Sportback.

While there are nine models in the A5 lineup, there are only three powertrain options. The A5 Coupe S line, A5 Sportback 40, A5 Sportback 45, and A5 Cabriolet S line all use a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with an S Tronic transmission.

The RS 5 Coupe and RS 5 Sportback both use a 2.9-liter 6-cylinder engine with a Tiptronic transmission. Lastly, the S5 Coupe, S5 Sportback, and S5 Cabriolet share a 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine with a Tiptronic transmission.

Which safety features are standard or available will depend on the model, trim level, and package chosen by the consumer. For example, the A5 and S5 both now have adaptive cruise control as part of the Convenience package.

Audi A5 Redesign

The New Audi A5 2023 is a functional five-door variant of the Audi A5 Coupe. It shares the fastback coupe design (hence the name), but adds a second set of doors, providing more accessible rear seats.

Unlike the A5 Coupe, which has two rear bucket seats and room for only four passengers, the A5 Sportback’s rear seats allow up to five passengers. It also provides up to 35 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded.

With the rear seats in use, the A5 Sportback offers 21.8 cubic feet of cargo space, accessed via a wide-opening power rear hatch.

Trims for the A5 Sportback are Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. The trim was further broken down into the TFSI 40 and TFSI S-Line 45 versions, mostly showing the powertrain.

Standard features on the Premium include leather seats, heated front seats, auto-dimming mirrors, a panoramic sunroof, and a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

For 2023, Matrix-design LED headlamps and new 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels come standard on the A5 Sportback Premium.

Moving to the Premium Plus trim adds wireless device charging, remote keyless entry, driver seat memory presets, front and rear parking sensors, and a fully digital instrument panel, which Audi calls the “Virtual Cockpit.” Bang and Olufsen premium sound systems are standard on Premium Plus for 2023.

The highest trim Prestige features heated rear seats, navigation, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

The base engine comes on the A5 Sportback 40, and it’s a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. That makes 201 horsepower and 326 pound-feet of torque.

The A5 Sportback 45 S-Line is also equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine but tuned to produce 261 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Both engines transmit power through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission to the Quattro all-wheel drive.

The S-Line enhances the driving experience with sport suspension and both versions feature Audi Drive Select with Comfort, Auto, Dynamic (sport), and Individual (custom) driving modes.

The Sportback 40 is the more efficient of the two, returning fuel economy of 26 mpg city, 34 highway, and 29 combined. The Sportback 45 S-Line returns 24 mpg city, 31 highway, and 27 combined. Both powertrains require premium fuel.

Standard driver assistance features on the A5 Sportback include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and automatic headlights.

Features such as front and rear parking sensors, surround-view parking cameras, blind-spot monitoring, rear traffic alerts, adaptive cruise control, and heads-up displays are all optional or equipped as standard on top-level trims.

The base MSRP for the Audi A5 Sportback 2023 is $44,100 for the Premium 40 trim. The Premium 45 starts at $46,200, the Premium Plus 40 starts at $49,700, and the Premium Plus 45 starts at $51,800.

The Prestige 40 starts at $55,000 and the Prestige 45 starts at $56,250. The Audi A5 Sportback comes with a four-year/50,000-mile powertrain warranty.

2023 Audi A5 Sportback

The A5 Sportback is a great-looking, fun, and smooth-driving premium sedan that isn’t quite as aggressive as the 349-hp S5 Sportback, which we reviewed separately.

2023 Audi A5 refresh

An extended version of the A5 coupe and 2023 Audi A5 Convertible, the A5 Sportback sports an identical powertrain setup with a turbocharged inline-four bolted to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

The A5 Sportback 40 model has 201 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, while the A5 Sportback 45 gets an additional 60 horsepower and 40 pound-feet of torque.

Standard luxuries like high-quality leather, a panoramic sunroof, and moody ambient lighting make even the A5 Sportback’s base feel luxurious.

While rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz C-class or Genesis G70 have arguably more stylish interiors, the Sportback is supported by a very clear high-tech digital meter display with available navigation handled by Google Earth imagery.

The Audi A5 Sportback comes as largely the same car, with only minor equipment changes for 2023. A new set of 18-inch alloy wheels and Audi LED matrix-style headlights are now standard on all models.

A Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system has also been added as standard equipment for the Premium Plus trim only. The Black Optic Plus display package has been expanded to include a black rear lip spoiler and exhaust tips.

Adaptive cruise control is now included with the optional Convenience package. Lastly, the new Chronos Gray color replaces Quantum Gray as the paint option for the A5 Sportback 2023.

We love the mid-range Premium Plus. It adds many features to justify its price increase, including Audi’s trick Virtual Cockpit digital gauge display.

We also recommend the much more powerful 45 model, which has 261 horsepower versus the 201’s 40s.

2023 Audi A5 Interior

The cabin of the 2023 A5 Sportback isn’t quite as luxurious as some luxury brands might expect, but all the materials are top quality, the fit and finish are excellent, and there are enough advanced features to set it apart from the mainstream sedan.

2023 Audi A5 refresh

Rear-seat passenger space isn’t nearly as large as the Audi A4 sedan, but it’s roomy enough for two average-sized adults—and with a little sacrifice in rear headroom, you get the 2023 A5 Sportback’s sleek roofline, which is much sexier than its more angular sibling. and upright.

All A5 Sportback models are equipped with luxury necessities such as powered front seats, leather upholstery, panoramic sunroof, ambient interior lighting, and three-zone automatic climate control.

A hatchback in disguise, the A5 Sportback’ sloping rear roofline hides the power-operated liftgate and large cargo space, making it much more practical than the Audi A4 sedan or A5 coupe and convertible.

It proved its mettle in our carry-on tests by accommodating 16 suitcases despite having a small cargo area according to the numbers. The Sportback outperformed all of its direct competitors in our real-world cargo test.

Audi’s MMI is one of the most fun-to-use infotainment systems among premium brands. This is made even better with the optional 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit digital gauge display—and highly recommended—the A5 Sportback.

All models are equipped with a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen which can also be controlled by a click wheel mounted on the console between the driver and front seat passenger.

Audi’s MMI interface is easy to use on the go, but Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration is standard if users prefer to interact directly with their smartphone.

Navigation is optional and comes with access to a series of internet and vehicle connectivity features called Audi Connect Prime and Audi Connect Plus.

2023 A5 Engine

For 2023, the A5 Sportback can be had with two turbocharged four-cylinder powertrains. The model wearing the 40 badges produces 201 horsepower while the 45s model pumps out 261 horsepower.

All-wheel drive is standard and all A5 Sportbacks come with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

We haven’t tested either model yet, but the last-generation car with the 252-hp engine managed to hit 5.0 seconds of zero to 60 mph on our test track, so we’d expect the 45 to be just as fast.

The A5 Sportback is quiet, confident, and easy to drive quickly through corners; that’s all a modern sports sedan should be. Its agility also negates its comfort: Potholes and broken curbs don’t bother it much, especially when equipped with the optional adaptive suspension.

The well-weighted steering feels natural in the driver’s hand, and the front tires respond immediately to input, making this Audi a pleasure to drive on twisty asphalt.

2023 A5 MPG

The EPA estimates the A5 Sportback will deliver up to 26 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.

2023 Audi A5 refresh

However, we weren’t able to evaluate real-world mpg until we ran it on the 75 mph highway fuel-efficient route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen.

While we haven’t tested the new A5 Sportback on our real-world highway fuel-efficient routes, the older model we evaluated delivered 34 mpg during that test.

For more information on the A5 Sportback’s fuel economy, visit the EPA website.
