SQL database server requirementsIf you are using a remote SQL database server for the SolarWinds Patch Manager database, ensure that the server meets the following requirements. See Patch Manager SQL account permissions for details about the SQL Server accounts and account permissions used in Patch Manager. SQL High Availability is not supported in Patch Manager. SQL Server Express supports managed computers in both small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). For large enterprises where your data storage can grow beyond 10GB, SolarWinds recommends using a supported SQL Server version. WMI requirementsThe following table lists the WMI requirements required by systems running Windows operating systems to establish a successful WMI connection with a remote system. RequirementSystemsDistributed Component Object Model (DCOM) File and Print Sharing RPC Service WMI Firewall Exception Remote systemsCredentials with Local Administrator rightsRemote systems in the credential ringDCOMLocal systemsWMI technology is based on DCOM / Remote Procedure Call (DCOM/RPC) communication. DCOM/RPC allocates the ports used by the server within a dynamic port range—typically between ports 1024 and 65536. To configure these ports using Windows Firewall on your managed computers, enable the Inbound Rules in the WMI group. See the Microsoft operating system documentation for details. Ports 135, 445, and dynamic ports 1024 to 65536 must be open between Patch Manager and the remote system. See Port requirements for all SolarWinds products to review all Patch Manager ports. How much space does WSUS server must have for the installation and to hold updates? The WSUS server must have 100 MB of space for the installation and 6 GB of space to hold the updates. 5. WSUS allows for automatic approvals which could potentially cause problems in the network in the event that an update patch breaks one of the business applications.
Can WSUS run on Windows 10?Installed on Microsoft Windows Server, WSUS is a simple tool that system administrators use to manage Microsoft Windows updates. It is available for Windows Server 2008 R2, 2012, 2012 R2, 2016, 2019 and will be part of Server 2022. All supported Microsoft client OSes can use WSUS, including Windows 8.1, 10 and 11.
What services are needed for WSUS?WSUS uses seven services. They are the Update Service (wsusservice.exe), the Reporting Web Service, the API Remoting Web Service, the Client Web Service, the Simple Web Authentication Web Service, the Server Synchronization Service, and the DSS Authentication Web Service.
Is port 80 required for WSUS?If your company restricts access, you'll need to configure your firewall to allow your WSUS server to access Microsoft domains. Your first WSUS server must have outbound access to ports 80 and 443 on the following domains: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
