In our class last Thursday, our professor talked about Rokeach Value Survey. According to Wikipedia, the Rokeach Value Survey (RVS) is a classification system of values. Developed by social psychologist Milton Rokeach, the system consists of two sets of values, 18 individual value items in each. One set is called terminal values the other instrumental values. Terminal values are the goals that we work towards and view as most
desirable. These values are desirable states of existence. They are the goals that we would like to achieve during our lifetime. Rokeach developed a list of 18 terminal values. Instrumental values are the preferred methods of behavior. Instrumental values are not an end goal, but rather provide the means by which an end goal is accomplished. Character traits and personal characteristics, such as being imaginative and independent, make up most of the instrumental values. Rokeach developed a list of 18 instrumental values. The task for us in the survey is to arrange the 18 terminal values, followed by the 18 instrumental values, into an order “of importance to us, as guiding principles in our life.” The top 5 terminal values I have were (1) An Exciting Life, (2) Family Security, (3) Health, (4) Mature Love and (5) Salvation. On the other hand, my top 5 instrumental values were (1) Responsible, (2) Independent, (3) Logical, (4) Self-Controlled and (5) Ambitious. I think that my experiences and my role in my family affect my terminal values. Being the breadwinner of my family, I need to be responsible and logical. Having lost both my parents allowed me to be independent, self-controlled and ambitious. I finished college through scholarship. After graduation, I immediately looked for a job so that I may support my younger siblings. I became ambitious because I want to achieve more in life especially those that my family and I were somehow deprived of. Our culture, on the other hand, played a very important role in the selection of terminal values that are of most importance to me. This can be determined on how I place family security, mature love and salvation to be part of my top 5 terminal values. I came from an extended family. I lived with my grandparents and aunts. I was raised by a family of Catholics and I attended a Catholic school. Understanding the results of the survey, I see that I wanted to achieve an exciting life and along with that are family security, health, mature love and salvation. I attempt to achieve these goals by being ambitious, self-controlled, logical, independent and responsible. The means people use to achieve their goals might violate moral values like honesty, or violate one’s personal sense of competence and capability like become illogical. My five instrumental values include ambition, cleanliness, forgiveness, responsibility, and self- control. The instrumental values most important to me focuses more on competence than morality. These instrumental goals are key aspects that focus on pursuing one’s life goals. Honesty is the best policy. Honesty is one of the most important aspects in pursuing one’s goals in life. Ambition is also one of many important values in a goal oriented person. Ambition is required for one to achieve goals and be successful. Cleanliness and responsibility are at an equal level of importance in my life. Cleanliness is associated with responsibility in numerous ways. One has to be responsible to keep oneself and one’s surroundings clean which leads to a happy lifestyle. Forgiveness and self-control are two keen values to one’s life as well. Self-control is very important to succeed in life. However, every individual has both instrumental and end values, every person differs in how they order the values into priorities, which accounts for tremendous variation among people. Comprehending one’s own values clarifies what is important, which is essential for effective leadership. Leaders can identify and comprehend value differences to improve communication and effectiveness. Instrumental and end values are both essential in achieving goals and having a successful life whether it is a personal end value and social end value or morality instrumental value and competence instrumental value. This paper described and listed five instrumental and end value and their importance in one’s life.
