Call quality on the Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017) is okay, without any major issues, but not as clear as on a flagship. We found it a bit more challenging than usual to understand what our callers are saying in busier environments, but if you are not out on a busy street, you should be just fine.

Battery life

Will last you a busy day, and then some.

The Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017) features a 3,000mAh, non-removable battery.

This, combines with the HD display that is not too taxing and the power-efficient, 14nm system chip, make the phone a battery champ.

In our usage, we got around a day and a half, and if you do not use your phone that much, you can go two days off the charger, which is more than most smartphones.

We also ran our custom battery test on the J5 (2017). All phones undergoing this test are set at an equal brightness level of around 200 nits to level the playing field. The new J5 scores north of 10 hours on this test, which ranks it among the top performers as well, and confirms our real-life experience. It’s also nearly 15% better than the score of the predecessor, the J5 (2016).

We also measure how long it takes to recharge a phone’s battery from 0 to 100%. The new J5 (2017) also brings slightly faster charging thanks to its 5 volt, 1.55 amp wall charger, and recharges fully in 2 hours and 10 minutes. This puts it in the middle of the ranks in terms of charging speed.

Price and alternatives

At launch, the Galaxy J5 (2017) sells for a price of around €260 in Europe, and at the time of this writing is not yet officially sold in the United States.

And at that price, it is not much cheaper than mid-range phones like the Galaxy A5 (2017), which currently retails for €330. And you get a lot more with the A5 (2017): much more impressive design and a water-protected body, sharper display, faster performance, slightly better camera, double the storage and more RAM.

For around the same price as the A5, you can also get a 32GB iPhone SE, which comes with a vastly superior performance, much better camera, 4K video support, and the iOS platform with its timely updates.

Your other alternatives?

The excellent Moto G5 Plus comes to mind: sold at exactly the same price, it has a cleaner interface that runs much smoother, it has a faster and better camera, and double the storage.

There are other phones to consider in this price range as well: the Sony Xperia XA1 with its interesting design and clean interface, the Moto Z Play with its truly 2-day battery, the Huawei P10 Lite and more. It’s a crowded space.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, the Galaxy J5 (2017) feels like an ‘okay’ affordable phone, but is not pushing any boundaries.

It has one of the best interfaces around: sleek and modern-looking, it has Samsung’s excellent apps, and it has a very solid battery life. But its camera and, most importantly, performance are underwhelming. The phone often feels stuttery and the camera lacks in detail and speed. And we know the terrible state of Android updates for phones like the J5 (2017). In such a fiercely competitive market, the J5 (2017) does too little to stand out.

this phone being upgraded to android 9 is so bad. it decreases the performance and i can see it. i have the 16GB version and the os itself takes up 10GB storage. you cant downgrade it to android 7 with odin because the bootloader is updated as well

i bought this back in early 2018 when my HTC A9 broke and i didn't have much money to buy a new phone. Coming from that piece of crap I was amazed at how good this cheap Samsung phone was; zero bugs,good battery, good software support, great thermals, reliable fingerprint reader, and it just worked with no questions asked. screen broke in late 2020 and i decided to upgrade rather than fix it but was a bit disappointed that the a71 I bought didn't give me the same experience.

I bought mine back in 2017 and until today, halfway through 2023 it still does what it's supposed to do, so good quality and durable hardware. The only limitation that bugs me is the 16 GB storage is a lot less than you think because a huge chunk (something like 14 GB) of it is taken up by the OS itself and the mandatory bloatware (non essential default installed apps that can't be removed) that comes with it. The storage feels constrained even if you don't keep your photos and videos on the internal storage.

I have this J5 for over the year. great photos, relatively fast, does the job. The only issue is that it randomly, once a week or two weeks, does the some kind of soft restart while it's turned on. It shuts down and turns on within thirty seconds and afterwards works ok. No matter if the battery is 100% or any less, it's kind of annoying when it happens, especially if I wanna make a call. Does anyone has similar issue?

I have this phone since 2017 and the performance is the same as the first day, I have kept the J5 2017 and everything is at a high level, it still does not freeze or create screen burning and the battery is like a beast, the battery lasts a day in use and today and this is a wow Samsung

Low gsm signal sensivity. Does not ring where other phones ring in the same network same location. Good strong bluetooth signal about 50m. Good battery. Quite good display in bright Sun. Stable wifi and hot spot. Only 32gb memory is a big misunderstanding.

I suggest that Samsung can produce Samsung J5 2017 again with its golden metal body . Make it android 13, memory128 GB plus card slot , 5000 mA battery . Keep all goid things in it as compass , radio etc. Thanks.
