Located as close as an hour outside of New Orleans, you can tour these stately mansions and hear stories from all perspectives, from the famous local families that built and owned them to the views of the slaves who worked there. Learn why the kitchens are not part of the main house and find out how residents lived in comfort before air-conditioning. Many of the plantations serve lunch so you can make a day of it or just visit one or two. Some offer overnight accommodations with dinner and breakfast. Our experience with Laura and Oak plantations was really good as well. The driver (an older gentleman) was an expert on the history of New Orleans and surrounding plantations. This was a half day well spent. We did the full day tour, visiting Laura and Oak Alley and the swamp. We were picked up outside the French Quarter and the driver called both of our cell phones to confirm the time -- I really appreciated that. The large van picked us up from our hotel on time. The driver gave a good narrated tour on the way to Oak Alley and Laura. Both plantations had excellent tours. "Don't miss to visit this plantation on you visit to New Orleans. It is one hour driving from the city, but the area is lovely to ride. The plantation itself is very interesting and our guide Anne was great, very clear and enthusiastic explaining every detail of Laura’s story." - Florencia R "Great tour We visited Laura and Oak Alley plantations and Laura had a much more informative and interesting tour. It included many parts of the house and the grounds, story of the family and the slaves. While Oak Alley's focus is on the exterior of the plantation, Laura provides more overall and balanced view of the time. I would suggest going to both but if you only have to pick one, definitely Laura. As a creole plantation, it is totally different from the palatial ones on River Road. But our tour guide made it come alive. He is a Cajun himself ( wonderful accent) and so personally vested in their culture and history. We spent 2 hours there and could have stayed longer.
