Davines shampoo review

In this guide I’m going to show you everything you need to know to pick out the ideally suited Davines product for your hair and needs. My salon TouchUps in Chandler Arizona has carried the Davines Essentials line since our opening and we love it a bit more every day as I’m sure you will too!

Davines: Excelling in Beauty, Sustainably

Davines is a wonderful company focused on producing the highest quality products possible while doing so sustainably. Founded in Parma, Italy in 1983 by the Bollati family. Davines has grown to a wide range of products with distribution in 70+ countries.

Davines Haircare and Davines Products

“BY CREATING BEAUTY SUSTAINABLY, WE ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES, OF THE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH THEY LIVE & WORK, OF THE THINGS THEY LOVE.” -davines

Davines’ mission is to bring beauty and simplicity into the hair cosmetics world, and they do so by locally sourcing their ingredients and practicing industry leading sustainable practices.

We love them because of the high level of products they produce and their focus on the environment, consumers and us stylists! Yay!

Davines Essentials: Back to Basics

Davines shampoo review
Davines Essential Shampoo Families

The Davines Essentials line was created around the idea that simplicity in hair products can lead to beautiful results.

Of course, the Davines Essentials are all free from sulphates and parabens but that is just the beginning of the awesomeness. Each one of the Essentials product’s primary ingredients is sourced from a specific farm local to the production facilities in Parma.

This is all a part of Davines’ partnership with the non-profit Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversitythis partnershipcalled the Davines Slow Food Presidia was done to encourage the biodiversity of the planet.  Many of the ingredients grown for the Essentials Shampoos are rare and are being maintained specifically do to their excellent cosmetic properties.

Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity

“To strengthen this renewed commitment Davines has started a collaboration with the non-profit Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity by joining the Presidia Project; this non-profit foundation protects selected places in order to safeguard the Earth’s biodiversity, by building bridges between ecology, gastronomy, ethics and the pleasures of the table.” -Davines

Davines also highly values the world’s environments and wants to honor that by only producing the Essentials Haircare line with energy from renewable sources.

Don’t think that the plastic they use is anything else other than amazing and sustainable as well as “the packaging of the Essential Haircare range is Zero Impact® – carbon neutral and is created using the minimum amount of food grade plastics necessary.”

Finally, to ensure that their mission to be good for the consumer, stylist and environment is complete Davines has committed to reforestation projects in Madagascar to offset every ounce of Carbon Dioxide emitted during production. What’s not to love about that!

MINU: For the Colored Among Us

MINU shampoo is the Essential shampoo for those of you that color your hair! They named it MINU because it is short for illuminating (see the shine now?) It was designed using Caper Blossom extract in order to maximize the life of your hair color and leave your hair feeling oh so shiny!

Davines shampoo review

We use MINU shampoo every single day in the salon as the vast majority of our clients get their hair colored by us. All the stylists have nothing but positive things to say about it and we recommend it to pretty much anyone who colors their hair.

I love it personally because of its phenomenal scent and its ability to add a level of luster to otherwise dull looking hair.

My clients love that it helps them protect their hair from the harsh Arizona sun, our outdoor lifestyle and because it minimizes the amount of color-refreshing that we have to do in the salon.

MOMO: Maximum Hydration

MOMO shampoo is for you if you have dry hair and it needs that extra boost of moisture to help bring it back to life. MOMO is short for (of all things obvious) moisture.

Its amazing natural active ingredient is (sorry for the mouthful) Cartucciaru Melon. This special melon extract gives it a long-lasting moisturizing effect in your hair.

Davines shampoo review

We love MOMO shampoo in the shop because the Chandler Arizona climate is as dry as it gets. Lots of our clients need that boost of moisture to soften their hair back up after a long summer and MOMO gets that job done to perfection.

I love MOMO because I have so many clients that come to me with dried out hair from the Arizona summer dryness. They also show up with dried out hair because of inferior products and an unhealthy zest for heat styling. (I’m looking at you!) However, MOMO has always been a wonderful tool for me to help bring the softness and shine back into these client’s hair.

MELU: But I Want My Hair Long!!!

MELU shampoo is a weird duck when it comes to shampoo categories. It is probably one of the most uniquely suited shampoos currently on the market.

MELU is for long hair and anti-breakage Its name is short for mellowing and that is what we have experienced for ourselves in the salon. It mellows the crazy ends that most long hair girls get when they are trying to either grow their hair very long or that happens from day to day styling.

TouchUps client and Ambassador, @halljessicalynn!

We recommend MELU whenever a client is trying to grow their hair out because of its anti-breakage properties. The feedback has been positive and we love partnering it with the conditioner because it feels soooo good on the hair.

Davines shampoo review

I have used it on my wife and while she did like the feeling of protecting her hair it did cause her a bit of itchiness which was a total bummer.

I do still recommend it to clients but always with the disclaimer that if need be and they have a similar reaction they can bring it right back for an exchange. (Hey customer service is customer service, right?)

NOUNOU: Help for the Highlighted

NOUNOU Shampoo, short for Nourishing is a the Davines shampoo of choice for you if you highlight, perm or relax your hair. It is a great protein shampoo to help build back up the integrity of your hair.

Utilizing, (pronounce it with me now) Fiaschetto Tomato to boost its antioxidant properties and nourishing capabilities.

Davines shampoo review

We use NOUNOU Shampoo every day at TouchUps because, as you can believe, we do a LOT of highlighting, balayages etc. It is a stylist favorite and is our #2 best seller behind MINU and let me tell you it is a close race!

Clients love it as well and they are consistently coming back for it again and again. They say not only does it smell delicious, but it makes the hair feel like a dream.

I am in love with this product and it does exactly what I have wanted it to do. Occasionally I will run across a client who has an extreme case of breakage and in this case, I will bring out the Davines Natural Tech Nourishing Shampoo in its place.

This is a rare occurrence though because we value the integrity of the client’s hair when we color so when we maintain it for them it never gets that damaged. For everyone else, NOUNOU is the jam!

DEDE: Daily Washers Rejoice!

DEDE Shampoo is for the clients who cannot help themselves and must wash their hair every day. If this is you don’t worry, I forgive you. I’m sure you have tried to not wash it and it just didn’t work out.

No worries. Davines has come up with a shampoo just for you so we don’t have to stop being friends, jk! The Red Celery contained in it helps to restore the minerals that we strip out of hair with too much washing.

Also, its extra light and gives a pretty good shine to the hair so you don’t have to feel that guilty.

Davines shampoo review

We rarely use DEDE in the salon because there is usually a color or highlight on the clients, but it is saved for our ladies with super fine and or light hair.

Dede Shampoo, by Davines.

It really does the trick in those situations and leaves their hair with as much volume as it can have.

I like DEDE for that rare client but wouldn’t say that it is something I use all that often. Generally, I have at least one or two other primary concerns with somebody’s hair ahead of just daily washing. However, it does make it light and shiny!

SOLU: For When You Need to be Really Clean!

SOLU shampoo is the Davines shampoo that is made specifically for clarifying your hair from excessive products. You know who you are! Its special ingredients include Buckwheat from Valtellina (fancy eh?) Unsurprisingly, it does what it is supposed to do, which is make your hair squeaky clean.

We only use SOLU in the salon in order to prep hair for other services such as Keratin Complex or extensions. Sorry for the brevity lol!

The clients and I like it for what it is for and I have yet to think of a reason to complain. It’s always nice when a line like Davines completes itself with a clarifying shampoo. They can get a little less love then all the other facets of hair care.

VOLU: MORE VOLUME, MORE FUN

VOLU shampoo is the ultimate shampoo for you ladies with thin and limp hair. It does an excellent job of keeping the hair fluffy and light. The Caprauna Turnip extract helps to plump the hair up while maintaining its softness and ability to style. Sadly, there is no longer a conditioner pairing for the VOLU line. I generally recommend my clients get the DEDE conditioner with the VOLU because it is also light and great for fine hair textures.

Davines shampoo review

In the salon we mostly use VOLU on our fine haired haircut clients because we like to work with NOUNOU or MINU if the client has colored or highlighted hair. We do recommend it fair amount of it for take home because it is color safe for those clients.

I like the fact that my clients who want or need that extra volume have a great option in a Davines shampoo. I have only had positive feedback from my clients with skinny hair about the VOLU and am happy with the results they have experienced. My wife is currently using this product and has noticed a difference in the “greasiness” of her hair. Stating that it felt less greasy with the VOLU then with another shampoo option.

LOVE Smoothing: Tame the Mane!

LOVE Smoothing shampoo is the only option for the thick haired clients we see at the shop. It’s an amazingly powerful smoothing and anti-frizzing shampoo. This shampoo has won numerous awards including Allure’s Best of Beauty Awards and Coveteur’s Best In Hair. The Olive extract gives it a pleasant scent and a fabulous ability to leave the hair silky smooth.

Davines shampoo review

At TouchUps Salon we have a ton of thick haired clients who live for LOVE smoothing shampoo and conditioner. It really does help knock their frizz and unwanted body down considerably which is why we have no issue recommending it regularly.

I use it behind the chair at least once a day. My clients tend to have more needy hair types, so I love that LOVE Smoothing is not only color safe but also a heavy lifter when it comes to our styling needs. If you are thick or crazy haired you owe it to yourself to give it a try!

LOVE Curl: Let Me See You Bounce With Me

LOVE Curl shampoo and the LOVE Curl Cleansing Cream are both excellent choices for naturally curly ladies who need the added moisture in their hair to keep the curl bouncy and hydrated. Both products utilize almond extract to keep those curls soft and volumized!

Davines shampoo review

The main difference between the LOVE Curl shampoo and the Cleansing Cream is that the shampoo is a great cleanser for the days when you need to get the product off your curls in a gentle and safe way. The Curl Cleansing
Cream is for the rest of the days where you would like to leave a maximum amount of hydration in the hair and, in my opinion, use one of the richest and most luxurious cleansing experiences ever!

We are a curly loving salon and the LOVE Curl family is hard as heck to keep on our shelves. We blow through it week in and week out. Knowing that every type of curl is a little different, most of our clients believe in its ability to help their curly hair feel great.

I usually start my clients off with the LOVE Curl shampoo and then when they give it a thumbs up, move them into switching between he LOVE Curl shampoo and the LOVE Curl Cleansing Cream. This helps to prevent any build up from the Curl Cleansing Cream which does have to be cleansed off the hair every couple weeks with a full-fledged shampoo.
