Như các quốc gia lớn nhỏ khác, nước Mỹ hàng năm cũng có rất nhiều lễ hội được tổ chức, trong đó có những lễ hội nay đã được biết đến trên toàn thế giới. Hãy cùng tìm hiểu các lễ hội truyền thống và độc đáo ở Mỹ nào!

Ngày đầu năm mới (1/1)

Ngày 1/1 là ngày tết Tây, nước Mỹ được nghỉ lễ một ngày để chào đón sự kiện quan trọng này. Thường người Mỹ sẽ được nghỉ kết hợp với thứ 6,7 và tổng cộng họ có 3 ngày nghỉ Tết – 1 con số khá khiêm tốn. Trước thời khắc chuyển năm, người Mỹ không “ăn” mà “uống”. Họ có thể ngồi trong các quán rượu hay quây quần trong nhà trước màn hình, theo dõi đồng hồ đếm ngược những giây phút cuối cùng của năm cũ còn sót lại. Nếu ở New York, họ có thể chen chúc ở quảng trường Thời Đại (Time Squares), ngóng chờ trực tiếp quả cầu rơi xuống như dấu chấm của năm cũ để chuyển sang năm mới trong ánh sáng rực rỡ của pháo hoa. Trong thời gian chờ đợi cũng có một số chương trình ca hát với những ca sĩ nổi tiếng.

Sinh nhật Martin Luther King (15/1)

Mục sư King nổi tiếng vào năm 1955 khi ông lãnh đạo một cuộc tẩy chay thành công những đường xe buýt công cộng tại thành phố Montgomery thuộc tiểu bang Alabama ở miền nam, buộc thành phố phải chấm dứt tập tục phân biệt những hành khách da đen. Ông được trao Giải Nobel Hòa bình vào năm 1964, cùng năm bộ luật dân quyền quan trọng chấm dứt phân biệt tại những nơi công cộng và cấm phân biệt trong việc làm căn cứ trên chủng tộc, màu da, tôn giáo, giới tính hay nguồn gốc quốc gia. Luật này được Tổng thống Lyndon Johnson ký ban hành.

Ngày lễ này được lập vào năm 1983 khi Tổng thống Ronald Reagan lúc bất giờ ký ban hành một đạo luật qui định ngày thứ Hai của tuần lễ thứ ba trong tháng Giêng để kỷ niêm sinh nhật Mục sư King, sinh vào ngày 15 tháng 1 năm 1929 tại Atlanta, bang Georgia. Quốc hội Hoa Kỳ chỉ định ngày lễ Martin Luther King, Jr. là một ngày quốc lễ vào năm 1994, một quyết định nhắm mục đích khuyến khích dân chúng Mỹ tham gia vào các dự án cộng đồng.

Mục sư King bị ám sát vào ngày 4 tháng Tư năm 1968 tại Memphis, Tennessee, nơi ông đến để giúp những công nhân lấy rác da đen đình công đòi được bình đẳng về lương bổng.

Ngày lễ độc lập (4/7)

Tại Hoa Kỳ, Ngày Độc Lập, còn gọi là 4 tháng 7 (the 4th of July), là một ngày lễ liên bang để kỷ niệm Tuyên ngôn Độc lập được ký năm 1776. Ngày lễ này thường được đi kèm với những cuộc diễu hành, liên hoan ngoài trời, và nhiều buổi lễ công cộng. Từ năm 1777, pháo hoa đã được đốt để đón mừng ngày lễ. Ngày Độc lập được chào đón với những biểu hiện yêu nước. Nhiều nhà chính trị thường đọc diễn văn ca ngợi các di sản và người dân của Hoa Kỳ. Các gia đình thường làm cuộc liên hoan ngoài trời, thường tụ họp với những người bà con ở xa, vì được nghỉ nhiều ngày cuối tuần hơn. Các cuộc diễu hành được diễn ra sáng ngày 4, vào buổi tối thường có pháo hoa ngoạn mục. Trong dịp lễ thì nhiều gia đình treo cờ Hoa Kỳ ở trước nhà để mừng.

Ngày lễ lao động (thứ 2 đầu tiên của tháng 9)

Khác các nước khác xung quanh ngày lễ Lao Động là ngày 01 tháng 5, tại Hoa Kỳ vào ngày thứ Hai đầu tiên trong tháng Chín là ngày lễ lao động, đây cũng là thời điểm các đội bóng ,thể thao được nghỉ dài ngày sau mùa thi đấu. Người dân Mỹ cũng được nghỉ 1 ngày để chào đón ngày lễ này. Lễ Lao Động có hơn 100 năm trước, nhằm mục đích vinh danh những đóng góp của giới lao động cho xứ sở này. Hoa kỳ có trên 155 triệu công nhân viên.

Ngày Columbus (ngày thứ 2 của tuần thứ 2 tháng 10)

Christopher Columbus đã tìm ra Châu Mỹ và mở đầu cho cuộc di cư của người châu âu sang châu Mỹ. Chính bởi vậy đây được coi là ngày trọng đại ở Hoa Kỳ. Mặc dù có những ý kiến trái chiều về người tìm ra châu Mỹ, nhưng Columbus vẫn được lấy tên danh dự cho ngày kỉ niệm đặc biệt này.

Halloween (31/10)

Ngày cuối cùng của tháng 10 dương lịch là ngày Halloween hay còn gọi là lễ hội ma quỷ. Đây là một lễ hội bắt đầu vào buổi chiều tối ngày 31-10 cho tới 12 giờ đêm và trò chơi "Trick Or Treat" là sinh hoạt chính của hầu hết trẻ em và thiếu niên tại Hoa Kỳ trong đêm Halloween. "Trick" nguyên nghĩa là: đánh lừa, trò chơi tinh ma nghịch ngợm. "Treat" là tiếp đón, đối xử tử tế, tiếp đãi.

Các em nhỏ và thiếu niên, thanh niên hóa trang với áo quần và mặt nạ hình ma quỷ, rồi cầm lồng đèn đi từ nhà này sang nhà khác trong xóm, gõ cửa và nói "trick or treat." Câu này có nghĩa là: “Nếu muốn chúng tôi không chơi xấu thì hãy đãi chúng tôi cái gì đi.” Thông thường những người láng giềng luôn luôn muốn tránh việc "trick" nghĩa là chơi đòn đánh lừa nên thường tiếp đón (treat) chúng bằng kẹo và trái cây (theo tục lệ có nhét đồng tiền ở bên trong)

Theo tục lệ, các em nhỏ thường cầm theo lồng đèn làm bằng vỏ quả bí ngô được đục theo hình mặt người để ánh sáng xuyên ra ngoài. Những cuộc hội hè vui chơi trong đêm Halloween thường xoay quanh các đề tài như chuyện may rủi trên đời, các chuyện kể về ma quỷ và phù thủy...

Ngày cựu chiến binh (11/11)

Nước Mỹ đã từng tham chiến rất nhiều cuộc chiến tranh như chiến tranh thế giới lần 1,2, chiến tranh Trung Quốc, Việt nam , Irac. Chính bởi vậy các chiến binh trở về từ các cuộc chiến được quan tâm đặc biệt. Và ngày 11/11 được chọn làm ngày tôn vinh các cựu chiến binh đó.

Lễ tạ ơn (thứ 5 tuần lễ thứ 4 tháng 11)

Ngày Lễ Tạ Ơn ở Hoa Kỳ là một sự pha trộn của huyền thoại và lịch sử. Học sinh tại các trường học và các tín đồ Ki Tô Giáo thường chỉ biết đó là một ngày lễ để tạ ơn Thiên Chúa của Ki-Tô Giáo theo truyền thống tôn giáo của họ, không cần biết là thực ra có một Thiên Chúa hay không, và tại sao phải tạ ơn Thiên Chúa trong khi không có một bằng chứng nào chứng tỏ Thiên Chúa của họ đã nhúng tay vào các việc thế gian. Thường thì hàng ngày trước bữa ăn, những người Ki-Tô Giáo hay cúi đầu cầu nguyện tạ ơn Thiên Chúa đã cho họ thức ăn trong bữa ăn đó.

Lễ Tạ Ơn trên đất Mỹ là ngày lễ để cho các tín đồ Ki Tô Giáo tạ ơn Thiên Chúa của họ. Khi xưa những người Ki-Tô cũng thường đến nhà thờ để tạ ơn Thiên Chúa của họ đã giúp họ thắng trận ngay. Tôi nghĩ có lẽ chúng ta cũng nên tìm hiểu vài sự thực ở ngoài truyền thống của Ki Tô Giáo về ngày lễ tạ ơn, và sau đó nhắc lại một vài bài về lễ Tạ Ơn đã phổ biến trước đây

Lễ xá tội gà tây

Lễ xá tội gà tây đã trở thành một sự kiện hàng năm được duy trì qua nhiều đời của các tổng thống Hoa Kỳ. Ông Abraham Lincoln được cho là vị tổng thống đầu tiên “tha tội” gà tây vào năm 1863 khi ra lệnh thả con gà dành cho Lễ Tạ ơn và để con trai ông nuôi nó.

Năm 1963, Tổng thống Kennedy đã trao trả chú gà tây “phục vụ” trong Lễ tạ ơn của Nhà Trắng cho trang trại. Kể từ đó, những đời tổng thống Hoa Kỳ sau này đều thả gà tây ra các vườn thú thay vì ăn thịt chúng. Tuy nhiên, lễ xá tội chỉ trở thành một sự kiện chính thức vào năm 1989, khi Tổng thống George H.W. Bush tuyên bố con gà tây năm đó đã được “tổng thống xá tội” và một truyền thống độc đáo đã ra đời.

Black Friday (Ngày thứ sáu đen)

Black Friday là ngày thứ sáu ngay sau Lễ Tạ Ơn và được coi là ngày mở hàng cho mùa mua sắm tấp nập nhất ở Mỹ. Ngày đặc biệt này có xuất xứ từ tình trạng… kẹt xe xảy ra vào ngày thứ sáu sau Lễ Tạ Ơn năm 1965 ở Philadelphia, khi hàng trăm nghìn người Mỹ chen chúc nhau, đen kịt các con phố, vỉa hè đi mua sắm để sửa soạn cho Lễ Noel sắp đến. Ngay lập tức, giới kinh doanh Hoa Kỳ cho quảng cáo rầm rộ trên các phương tiện thông tin đại chúng và đồng loạt khuyến mãi, giảm giá để thu hút khách hàng.

Ngày này là ngày đại hạ giá lớn nhất trong năm . Giá hạ, hàng bán giới hạn, nên người đứng xếp hàng mua rất đông. Có người thậm chí còn mang mền chiếu ra ngủ qua đêm trước cửa chờ dẫn đến cái line người dài ngoằn . Đi mua sắm ngày này, ngoài được giá hạ, người mua còn có được cảm giác nô nức, rất phấn khởi

Lễ Giáng Sinh (25/12)

Lễ Giáng sinh, còn được gọi là lễ Thiên Chúa giáng sinh, hay Noel là viết tắt từ gốc Em-ma-nu-el, nghĩa là Thiên Chúa ở cùng chúng ta), Christmas  là một ngày lễ kỷ niệm Chúa Jesus sinh ra đời, theo phần lớn các tín hữu Kitô giáo. Họ tin là Jesus được sinh tại hang Bethlehem thuộc xứ Judea nước Do thái (ngày nay là 1 thành phố của Palestine), lúc bấy giờ thuộc Đế quốc La Mã, khoảng giữa năm 7 TCN và năm 2.

Ngày lễ được cử hành chính thức vào ngày 25 tháng 12 nhưng thường được mừng từ tối ngày 24 tháng 12 bởi theo lịch Do Thái, thời điểm tính bắt đầu một ngày là lúc hoàng hôn chứ không phải nửa đêm. Lễ chính thức ngày 25 tháng 12 được gọi là "lễ chính ngày", còn lễ đêm 24 tháng 12 gọi là "lễ vọng" và thường thu hút nhiều người tham dự hơn. Người Mỹ hay các quốc gia khác trên toàn thế giới theo đạo Thiên Chúa thường rất coi trọng ngày lễ này, bạn có thể bắt gặp các hình ảnh trang trí về cây thông, hang đá, những bài hát Giáng Sinh khắp nơi trước ngày lễ khỏang 1 tháng trên khắp các nẻo đường của nước Mỹ và các nước khác trên Thế Giới.

Best for: A something-for-everyone family gathering

Why we love it: There is almost nothing compromised on a summer vacation to Monterey County, California, which makes it an easy, ideal coastal location for big family get-togethers. Encompassing Monterey, Carmel Valley and Carmel-by-the-Sea, Seaside, Pacific Grove, and Pebble Beach, the county shines with totally unique destinations that are all within easy reach of one another. In Monterey, beeline to the just-reopened Monterey Bay Aquarium's excellent touch exhibits, embark on guided kayaking tours on Monterey Bay with Adventures By the Sea, and walk Fisherman’s Wharf for clam chowder or to hop on a whale watching cruise. Some of the world’s best golfing can be found at legendary Pebble Beach with three top 50 public courses abutting the coast, and more in Seaside and Pacific Grove. Rent a bike in Pacific Grove to explore Asilomar State Park and its rich tide pools, and hike some of the best coastal trails and marine wildlife viewing in the state at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, where you should also visit the historic Whaler’s Cabin. Family dinners, candy and gelato shops, and beach bonfires (dogs welcome, too) are hard to beat in Carmel-by-the-Sea. A total departure awaits on the 25-mile drive south to Big Sur, with epic scenery at every turn—once there, check out the Notable Trail redwoods at California’s “mini Yosemite,” Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.

Where to stay: For a waterfront perch on Monterey Bay and an easy walk to the aquarium, Intercontinental The Clement Monterey on Cannery Row is a good option. Go a few miles inland to the foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains and you’ll find upscale, 500-acre Carmel Valley Ranch for a full-on family resort playground with three swimming pools, an 18-hole golf course, activities like beekeeping, falconry, hiking, and guided foraging walks, plus all-suite accommodations with private decks.

Colorado Springs, Colorado

Best for: Families that love mountain adventures

San Diego, California

Best for: An iconic California beach vacation

Why we love it: One of the best places in California to stick your feet in the sand and still have access to urban adventures for the kids is San Diego. Boasting year-round warm temperatures, the city offers 70 miles of dreamy coastline with options for everyone. The digital and all-encompassing “Immersive Van Gogh” exhibit opens June 10, and contemporary Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama’s new “Cosmic Nature” is adding awesome whimsy to the New York Botanical Garden through October 31. While it’s not pop, some 5,000 cool new rocks on display at the new Halls of Gems and Minerals opens this June at the American Museum of Natural History and are hard to resist no matter your age.

On historic Main Street, outdoor dining on car-free Sundays is the way to go (try Riverhorse on Main with its excellent wine cellar) and in July, lookout for family friendly outdoor concerts, like this summer’s Magical Music of Harry Potter.
