Today we are continuing our coverage of Nvidia's new SUPER graphics cards, with a look at Gigabyte's RTX 2070 SUPER Gaming OC model. Sporting a triple-fan cooler, factory overclocked core and single-zone RGB lighting, we've seen prices for this card start at £510, making it one of the more reasonably priced aftermarket models that we've reviewed. Show As we will detail on the next page, for this RTX 2070 SUPER Gaming OC 8G, Gigabyte is re-using the design from its RTX 2080 Gaming OC that launched last September. This means the card continues to use the Windforce 3X cooler, with one RGB zone on the card, though it is important to note Gigabyte is also using a reference PCB for this card. That is likely what has helped keep costs down for this model, however, as prices currently start at £509.99. The MSI RTX 2070 SUPER Gaming X Trio we reviewed a couple of weeks ago is still priced at £550 (or higher), so this represents a savings of around £40. The TU104 found on the 2070 SUPER uses a total of 40 SMs and 2560 CUDA cores, which is around 13% fewer cores than a vanilla 2080. For its Gaming OC model, Gigabyte has factory overclocked the core by 45MHz, with a rated boost clock of 1815MHz. The 8GB GDDR6 memory has been left at stock speeds, however, meaning it runs at 14Gbps over a 256-bit bus. The Gigabyte RTX 2070 SUPER Gaming OC 8GB ships in the same style of box that we have seen from a range of current-gen cards from Gigabyte. That means it does not have an image of the card itself visible from the front, instead this area is taken up by a large robotic eye. Inside, the included accessories consist of 1x quick start guide, 1x driver disk, and also a separate leaflet that lets you know you can extend the warranty for this card to four years if you register the product online. Moving onto the card itself, as we mentioned on the first page, Gigabyte is re-using the design for its 2080 Gaming OC that we saw last year. It obviously makes financial sense for Gigabyte to do this, so I'm not criticising them for it, but it is worth noting that if you were looking for a new shroud design or extra features – you won't find them here. What you will find is a matte black plastic shroud, with just a couple of grey accents to add extra interest. Being plastic, the shroud is certainly not as premium as the Founders Edition, but compared to the plastic shroud of the MSI Gaming X Trio model it certainly feels a bit more robust. I also appreciate the stealthy, colour-neutral design as this won't cause any issues in a colour-coordinated build. It's the three fans which draw most of our attention. You can see where the ‘Windforce 3X' cooler gets its name. Each fan measures 82mm in diameter, but the middle fan actually spins in reverse compared to the outer two fans. Gigabyte says this should reduce air turbulence, thereby improving heat dissipation from the cooler. As for the size of the card, it's certainly not small, but measuring 286.5 x 114.5 x 50.2mm it's not the biggest card we have seen over the past few weeks either. The thing I noticed most of all is that it's just under 115mm tall, making it a full inch shorter than the MSI Gaming X Trio. The front side of the card is home to the Gigabyte logo, and this is the only RGB zone on the whole card. It's pretty simple overall, but that could be a positive or a negative depending on how you feel about RGB! The backplate is also quite plain, though it is good to see it is made from what appears to be anodised aluminium. It's plain black apart from a small Gigabyte logo that's printed in white, right in the middle of the backplate. Power requirements and video outputs are both identical to reference spec – meaning the card requires 1x 8-pin and 1x 6-pin power connectors, while the I/O consists of 3x DisplayPort, 1x HDMI and 1x USB-C. Taking the card apart, we get a good look at the PCB that Gigabyte has used here. As we already mentioned, this PCB is the same as the 2080 Gaming OC model – which itself was a very slightly modified reference PCB. But for all intents and purpose, this can be thought of as a reference PCB, and Gigabyte certainly hasn't increased the power delivery or made any significant changes. That means we have an 8+2 phase power delivery, while our 8GB GDDR6 memory comes from Micron – each chip is labelled ‘9EA77D9WCW'. The GPU is labelled ‘TU104-410', signifying it is a cut-down TU104 chip that is used for 2070 SUPER cards. Rounding out our look at the cooler, we can see that the heatsink design is also the same as that 2080 Gaming OC. This means it is comprised of three separate aluminium fin stacks, and these are connected by 6x 6mm copper heatpipes. These make direct contact with the GPU core, but there is also a separate coldplate for the VRAM chips and another for the VRM as well. Our newest GPU test procedure has been built with the intention of benchmarking high-end graphics cards. We test at 1920×1080 (1080p), 2560×1440 (1440p), and 3840×2160 (4K UHD) resolutions. We try to test using the DX12 API if titles offer support. This gives us an interpretation into the graphics card performance hierarchy in the present time and the near future, when DX12 becomes more prevalent. After all, graphics cards of this expense may stay in a gamer’s system for a number of product generations/years before being upgraded. We tested the RX Vega64 and Vega56 using the ‘Turbo‘ power mode in AMD’s WattMan software. This prioritises all-out performance over power efficiency, noise output, and lower thermals. Driver Notes

We run each benchmark/game three times, and present averages in our graphs.3DMark Fire Strike is a showcase DirectX 11 benchmark designed for today’s high-performance gaming PCs. It is our [FutureMark’s] most ambitious and technical benchmark ever, featuring real-time graphics rendered with detail and complexity far beyond what is found in other benchmarks and games today. Things start pretty much as expected for the Gigabyte card, as it proves faster than the 2070 SUPER Founders Edition across all three tests. The MSI Gaming X Trio model, however, is itself marginally faster than the Gaming OC. 3DMark Port Royal is the world’s first dedicated real-time ray tracing benchmark for gamers. You can use Port Royal to test and compare the real-time ray tracing performance of any graphics card that supports Microsoft DirectX Raytracing. As well as benchmarking performance, 3DMark Port Royal provides a realistic and practical example of what to expect from ray tracing in upcoming games. That same trend is observed in Port Royal, 3DMark's ray tracing benchmark. The Gaming OC is only about 20 points behind the Gaming X Trio, but still about 130 points ahead of Nvidia's Founders card. Battlefield V is a first-person shooter video game developed by EA DICE and published by Electronic Arts. Battlefield V is the sixteenth instalment in the Battlefield series. Battlefield V continues this initial trend perfectly – across all three resolutions tested, the Gigabyte card slots in ahead of the Founders Edition, but just behind the MSI Gaming X Trio. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is set in the year 2029, two years after the events of Human Revolution and the “Aug Incident”—an event in which mechanically augmented humans became uncontrollable and lethally violent. Unbeknownst to the public, the affected augmented received implanted technology designed to control them by the shadowy Illuminati, which is abused by a rogue member of the group to discredit augmentations completely. (Wikipedia). We test using the Very High preset, with MSAA disabled. We test using the DX12 API. Moving onto Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Gigabyte's Gaming OC is 2% faster than the Founders Edition at 1080p, 1440p and 4K. It is never more a single frame slower than the Gaming X Trio. Far Cry 5 is an action-adventure first-person shooter game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Toronto and published by Ubisoft for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It is the eleventh entry and the fifth main title in the Far Cry series, and was released on March 27, 2018. The game takes place in the fictional Hope County, Montana, where charismatic preacher Joseph Seed and his cult Project at Eden’s Gate holds a dictatorial rule over the area. The story follows an unnamed junior deputy sheriff, who becomes trapped in Hope County and works alongside factions of a resistance to liberate the county from Eden’s Gate. (Wikipedia). We test using the Ultra preset, with AA and motion blur disabled. Far Cry 5, when tested at 1080p, is the only instance where we see the Gigabyte Gaming OC outperforming the MSI Gaming X Trio – at this resolution, there is a noticeable CPU bottleneck so the result is not significant. At 1440p and 4K, the Gigabyte shifts down and sits between the Founders Edition and that MSI card, though the margins are very small. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands is a tactical shooter video game developed by Ubisoft Paris and published by Ubisoft. It was released worldwide on March 7, 2017, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as the tenth instalment in the Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon franchise and is the first game in the Ghost Recon series to feature an open world environment. (Wikipedia). We test using the Very High preset. It's more of the same in Ghost Recon: Wildlands, where we see another 2% performance lead for the Gaming OC versus Nvidia's Founders Edition. Metro Exodus is a first-person shooter video game developed by 4A Games and published by Deep Silver in 2019. It is the third instalment in the Metro video game series based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's novels, following the events of Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light. (Wikipedia) We test using the Ultra preset, but with Hairworks and Advanced PhysX turned off. We test using the DX12 API. The margins are again very fine in Metro Exodus, with just 1 frame separating all three 2070 SUPER cards at 4K. Middle-earth: Shadow of War is an action role-playing video game developed by Monolith Productions and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. It is the sequel to 2014’s Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, and was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on October 10, 2017. (Wikipedia). We test using the Very High preset. No surprises when we get to Middle Earth: Shadow of War, with this Gigabyte again coming in 2% faster the Founders Edition.Shadow of the Tomb Raider is an action-adventure video game developed by Eidos Montréal in conjunction with Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix. It continues the narrative from the 2013 game Tomb Raider and its sequel Rise of the Tomb Raider, and is the twelfth mainline entry in the Tomb Raider series. The game released worldwide on 14 September 2018 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. (Wikipedia). We test using the Highest preset, with AA disabled. We test using the DX12 API. Shadow of the Tomb Raider doesn't deviate from the now well-established trend we have seen throughout this review – the Gaming OC sits right between both of the other 2070 SUPER cards we have already tested. Battlefield V was the first game released with Nvidia RTX ray tracing features (called DXR in game) and we present average frame rates for the game with DXR Off, and then again with DXR set to Ultra. Touching on ray tracing performance for this card, we don't see anything that we didn't expect. That means we averaged over 66FPS with DXR set to Ultra (at 1080p, that is), and while ray tracing at 1440p is possible – with an average frame rate of 51FPS – that is almost a 50% performance hit versus DXR off. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is an action-adventure video game developed by Eidos Montréal in conjunction with Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix. For these ray tracing benchmarks, we present average frame rates for the game with ray traces shadows (DXR) off, and then again with ray traced shadows set to Ultra. Shadow of the Tomb Raider runs at a very comfortable 80FPS when we set ray tracing quality to Ultra at 1080p. We also see over 50FPS at 1440p, though again this is still a punishing performance hit when compared to playing with ray tracing turned off. Here we present the average clock speed for each graphics card while running the 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra stress test 20 times. We use GPU-Z to record the GPU core frequency during the Fire Strike Ultra runs. We calculate the average core frequency during the entire 20-run test to present here. Throughout our performance testing we saw the Gigabyte Gaming OC run slightly faster than the 2070 SUPER Founders, but also marginally slower than MSI's Gaming X Trio model. It makes sense that this is exactly what we see when looking at the clock speeds of all three cards – the Gigabyte averaged 1903MHz under load, so about 40MHz faster than the Founders Edition but still 30MHz slower than MSI's card.For our temperature testing, we measure the peak GPU core temperature under load, as well as the GPU temperature with the card idling on the desktop. A reading under load comes from running the 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra stress test 20 times. An idle reading comes after leaving the system on the Windows desktop for 30 minutes. Thermal performance from the Windforce 3X cooler is nothing short of fantastic. The GPU peaked at just 62C, making it 3C cooler than the Gaming X Trio and a full 11C cooler than the Founders Edition. As we will see on the next page, it's not like Gigabyte had to run the fans particularly fast to achieve these temperatures either, so it's an all-round impressive job from Gigabyte. Our thermal gun showed no areas of concern for the Gaming OC, either, with hot spots at or around the 60C mark on the card. Both results are highly impressive.We take our noise measurements with the sound meter positioned 1 foot from the graphics card. I measured the noise floor to be 32 dBA, thus anything above this level can be attributed to the graphics cards. The power supply is passive for the entire power output range we tested all graphics cards in, while all CPU and system fans were disabled. A reading under load comes from running the 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra stress test 20 times. An idle reading comes after leaving the system on the Windows desktop for 30 minutes. Despite the GPU core running so cool, we saw the fans on the Gaming OC run at just 45%, or 1380RPM, when under load. This means the card is fantastically quiet and it didn't even reach 39dB on our sound meter. The Gaming X Trio is a couple of decibels quieter, but you'd be very unlikely to actually hear either card once installed in a proper case. As an added bonus, all three fans do stop spinning under light loads, and only kick into gear once the GPU core hits 60C based on our testing. We measure system-wide power draw from the wall while the card is sat idling at the Windows 10 desktop for 30 minutes. A reading under load comes from running the 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra stress test 20 times. As for power draw, I was slightly surprised to see this Gaming OC pull less power than the Founders Edition, but the margin proved to be just 2W so definitely within margin of error for a system-wide power consumption test. In any case, it's basically the same as the other 2070 SUPERs, with all three cards pulling with 10W of each other. My 2070 SUPER Gaming OC sample overclocked impressively well, as we could add +115MHz to the GPU core and +975MHz to the GDDR6 memory. Average clock speed under load This saw our average core frequency increase up to 2056MHz, so a real-world frequency improvement of 8%. Games Overlocking – Games testing part 2 Power consumption Overview Our 8% increase in clock speed scaled almost perfectly with our increase in frame rates at 1440p – where we saw an average improvement of 9% with this overclock. This puts the 2070 SUPER within touching distance of the 2080 SUPER, and bear in mind that card costs around £160 more than this Gigabyte model. Gigabyte's RTX 2070 SUPER Gaming OC 8G is the third RTX 2070 SUPER to pass through our labs, as we have already reviewed Nvidia's Founders Edition as well as MSI's Gaming X Trio model. The first thing you really need to know about it, is that it is re-using the same cooler and shroud design from the RTX 2080 Gaming OC that we reviewed last September. This also means Gigabyte is using a reference PCB, with the same 8+2 phase power delivery as the Founders Edition. Gigabyte has overclocked the core by 45MHz as well, but I wasn't expecting this to make that much of a difference and that is exactly what we found. Across all of our testing, the Gaming OC performs just 2% faster, on average, than the Founders Edition and it's just 1% slower than MSI's Gaming X Trio. That means performance differences between all three cards are frankly negligible – in game, you simply would not be able to tell that you were using one or the other. My sample did overclock pretty well, however, as we saw a real-world clock speed increase of about 150MHz when manually overclocked. This improved frame rates by 9% when gaming at 1440p, and actually brought the card within 2% of the 2080 SUPER. It is my strong belief that 2070 SUPER is a much better buy than 2080 SUPER, and considering you can overclock it to essentially the same levels of performance – while saving £160 – only re-affirms my opinion of that card. Temperatures and noise levels are also very strong areas for the Gaming OC. We saw the GPU peak at just 62C, which makes it the coolest-running RTX card on test today. MSI's Gaming X Trio ran 3C hotter, and the Founders Edition ran 11C hotter, so it's a definite win for Gigabyte's thermal team. As for noise levels, it's very easy on the ears. The Gaming X Trio is about 2dB quieter according to my sound meter, but both are so quiet to begin with it really doesn't make much difference. Chances are, if you put this card in any semi-sealed chassis, you just won't be able to hear those three fans spinning. The last area to touch on is pricing. While the Gaming OC is more expensive than the £475 MSRP for 2070 SUPER, I've seen it priced as low as £510 on Amazon (for the white model, at least). That makes it just 7% more expensive than the Founders Edition, and I find that price increase perfectly acceptable considering the big improvements to temperatures and noise levels that you get with the Gaming OC. AMD certainly has a thing or two to say with its RX 5700 XT, however, and that remains my firm recommendation for any gamer looking for the best value graphics card under £500 right now. That said, there are very valid reasons for wanting to stick with a Nvidia card – primarily ray tracing support and if you already own a G-Sync monitor – so if that is you, I think RTX 2070 SUPER is by far the most appealing of the new SUPER cards, and this Gigabyte RTX 2070 SUPER Gaming OC model is a great choice at a reasonable price.
