What could sway you to hand over $16,000 for a pair of sneakers? Maybe knowing you’re only one of five people in the world to own such a pair would be enough to slap down the credit card. Or that they were made in Australia’s own (and only) “sneaker atelier” by Melbourne-based designer Chase Shiel.

If you are so inclined, and happen to be partial to a decent whisky, you’re in luck because Glenfiddich is releasing a limited-edition line of sneakers to celebrate the launch of Grand Yozakura, a first-of-its-kind Scotch single malt finished in rare ex-Awamori casks from Okinawa, Japan.

The latest Glenfiddich x Shiel collaboration.

For more than 14 years, Shiel has been the go-to for footwear fans wanting the holy grail of fashion: something no one else has.

His custom footwear is made by hand and mostly takes the form of revamped classics such as Nike Dunks or Air Max 90s that can sell for up to $2000 a pair.

Pretty good for someone who, according to Shiel, had no interest in sneakers growing up. “I suffered from chronic fatigue in my late teens and early twenties and during that time I stumbled upon sneaker customising [painting].”

It was while recovering that Shiel’s curiosity was piqued. How were the shoes made in the first place?

“That’s how I got into making sneakers from scratch. [This was a hobby for 10 years] until I got to a stage where I could make it a full-time gig”, he says, having honed his shoe-making skills at RMIT first.

The Grand Yozakura sneaker marks Shiel’s third collaboration with the Speyside distillery, although this iteration ups the stakes somewhat, in keeping with the unique character of the whisky.

The brew was matured for 29 years in American and European oak casks before being transferred and finished in rare ex-Awamori casks, so Shiel opted for decadent trimmings, including Japanese leather for the uppers and a Chirimen silk dust bag. The gold stars around the toe and the Glenfiddich stag were custom-designed and handcrafted by ABC Buillon’s sister company Palloys using 99.99 per cent Australian gold. A first, says Shiel, for both himself and ABC Bullion.

Shiel’s approach to the creative process is rather unorthodox, with no pre-sketching or drafts done before the physical product is created. “It’s all in my head, I don’t sketch or draw anything.”

But thankfully the axiom “inspiration in a bottle” holds up even when you’re not required to drink the contents.

“About 30 minutes after the initial meeting outlining the project, I came up with the design,” says Shiel. “Numerous design elements stood out, which made the process a lot easier. It was clear in my mind, but still everyone involved wanted to get an idea of what I was thinking, so I had the help of a graphic artist to put my vision onto paper this time.”

Aside from all the precious metal and fibres, the other reason for the high price tag is rarity: you can’t head down to your local shoe shop to buy a pair. Interested parties will need to enter a ballot, which goes live on September 30.

If you are successful, and choose to follow through with investing in your own pair of Grand Yozakura sneakers, you’ll also get a bottle of the limited-edition whisky. That alone would normally set you back $2760. But if you’re already forking out a plane ticket’s worth of cash for sneakers it’s probably not about the money, is it?

If you’ve ever taken a road trip with a pet, you’re probably aware of how quickly your car will start to smell funky. I haven’t been flying as much because of the pandemic, so my dog Mika has been coming along with me on long drives. I love her to death, but she stinks!

After being bombarded by Instagram ads from Drift, a direct-to-consumer air freshener company, I decided to order some since I’ve been spending more time in my car and want to mask the musk.

I’ve never been much of an air freshener guy, and the only time I’ve really used them was when they were given to me after getting my car detailed. They’re ugly, they get in the way, and their scents can be overwhelming.

Drift is a new take on the car air freshener. In case you’re unfamiliar, Drift is a subscription box service that’ll send you a new air freshener every month or so (depending on how frequently you want one). With a price that starts at under $10 a month, it’s a relatively inexpensive convenience.

The air fresheners come in two different types. There’s a wood air freshener about the size of a credit card that comes from sustainably sourced tree farms in the United States. Drift also sells a silver-dollar-sized aluminum freshener that clips to your air conditioning vent. With the latter, you can control the scent intensity by twisting it clockwise or counterclockwise.

I tried both models. Although I preferred the look of the wood freshener more, the metal freshener’s scent lasted 2 weeks longer — totaling about a month of use before needing replacing. I also liked that the wood freshener magnetically clips right to my visor and stays out of the way. I use my air conditioner vents to mount my smartphone, so I’d prefer to keep my additional vents free from obstructions.

You can choose between six scent options: teak, mill, grove, amber, cabana, and a limited-edition scent of the month that changes every 30 days. The amber scent has notes of lavender and fresh rain, grove smells of citrus, cabana is coconutty and salty, teak is a masculine fragrance with hints of cedar and amber, and mill is very pine-like and reminded me of Christmas.

The scent of the month I tried was coffee — which made me crave a cup every time I got in my car. The “teak” and “mill” scents were definitely my favorites but may be too intense for some. The scents are strongest for the first couple of days of use, but they mellow out over time.

I appreciate that Drift uses all-natural fragrances and essential oils without using any harsh, toxic chemicals. Overall, they’re nice-looking, good-smelling, and relatively inexpensive air fresheners that show up at your doorstep like magic to keep your car smelling clean.
