Why is my laptop not connecting to TV with HDMI?

General information about connecting a television to a computer for use as a monitor.

  1. Make sure that the procedure to output the computer screen is performed correctly.
    NOTE: he problem may be solved by turning the device off and on again or disconnecting the cable and connecting it again, even when you follow the procedure shown below. Try following the procedure to output the screen again.
    1. Select a computer screen resolution that is supported by the TV. If the TV does not support the resolution set on the computer, the screen image may be distorted or may not be displayed.

NOTES:
  • For resolutions supported by the TV, refer to the instruction manual of the TV.
  • For how to check/change the computer screen resolution, refer to the help or instruction manual of the computer.
  • It is recommended that you take a note of the computer screen resolution before changing it. [It is necessary when you restore the original setting.]
  • Use a clone or duplicate output with 1080i if it is available on the computer. Some computers are not able to output an HDMI or HD signal in certain video modes.
  • Depending on the specifications of the computer and video card, some resolutions supported by the TV are unable to be displayed. For details, refer to the instruction manual, etc., of your computer and video card.
  • Turn off the TV and computer.

  • Connect the HDMI input port of the TV and HDMI output port of the computer via an HDMI cable.
    NOTE: Be sure to use an authorized High Speed HDMI cable bearing the HDMI logo.

    • A: TV
    • B: Computer
    • C: HDMI cable [not supplied]
  • Turn on the TV first, then turn on the computer.
    NOTES:
    • At this point, the input has not been switched to the computer, therefore the picture from the connected computer is not displayed.
    • If you turn on the connected computer first while the TV’s power is off or standby, the computer screen may not be displayed correctly 
  • Press the Input button of the TV’s remote to change to the input that is connected to the computer. Most TV remotes have an Input button that cycles from one input to the next. Press the Input button repeatedly until the correct HDMI input is displayed on the TV. Be sure to check which input on the TV you are connecting to.

    NOTE: The location of the Input button on your remote and the number and names of the inputs may be different on your TV.

  • If the above procedure does not solve the problem, follow the steps below.
    1. Change the computer screen output destination. For details on how to change it, refer to the help or instruction manual of your computer.

      Example of the procedure for Windows 10:

      Method 1: Windows Key + P Keyboard Shortcut
      1. Make sure all open programs are closed.
      2. Hold down the Windows key and press the P key on your keyboard.
      3. Select one of the following display style options.
        • PC screen only
        • Duplicate
        • Extend
        • Second screen only
      Method 2: Display Settings
      1. On your desktop, right-click your mouse and select Display settings.

      2. Click the Multiple Displays drop-down list, and select either of the following.
        • Duplicate these displays
        • Extend these displays
        • Show only on 1
        • Show on 2
  • Example of the procedure for Windows 8.1: 

    1. Display the Charms bar on the computer, then select Project in Devices.
    2. Select the output destination.
      • PC screen only - The image is not displayed on the TV.
      • Duplicate - The same image is displayed on both of the computer screen and the TV.
      • Extend - The image is extended onto the TV and allows you to have a desktop that spans across both the computer screen and TV.
      • Second screen only - The image is displayed on the TV only.

    NOTES:
    • When using a laptop computer, you can use the keyboard to change the display mode shown above.
      For Windows
      • While holding the [Fn] key, press a function key [[F3], [F5], [F7], [F10], etc.] to change the display mode. The applicable function key varies depending on the manufacturer.
      • When using a VAIO computer, press [F7] while holding the [Fn] key.
      • If you are uncertain about the keyboard operation, refer to the instruction manual, etc., of the computer.
      For Macintosh
      • Press [F7] to change the display mode.
      • If you are uncertain about the keyboard operation, refer to the instruction manual, etc., of the computer.
    • Some software for playing back video, DVDs, etc., may be unable to display images on the computer screen and external display [TV] simultaneously. In this case, set the display mode so that the image is displayed on either one of the displays 
  • On the computer, select a lower screen resolution, then check if the image is output correctly.
  • When the TV has another HDMI port, connect to it and check if the image is displayed correctly.

  • When you have another HDMI cable, use it to reconnect. [Redo steps 2 to 5 shown above.]

    If changing the cable solves the problem, the original HDMI cable may have a problem.

  • If 3 and 4 above do not solve the problem, reset the TV.

  • Discharge the computer.
    Remove the AC adaptor, power cable, battery, and peripheral devices from the computer to discharge it.
  • Many who use a windows 10 laptop or have just upgraded to one experience the ‘laptop to TV HDMI no signal’ issue.     Make your TV the default device

    • On the taskbar, right-click on the volume icon
    • Then select Playback devices. In the tab opened, select HDMI or Digital Output Device like your TV
    • Select Set as Default, then click OK

    Update drivers automatically

    • Go to Start >> using the search bar, type Device Manager, and click on it
    • Select Display adapters >> then select Intel UHD Graphics card  or your own graphics card [if you don’t use Intel]
    • Next, click on update drivers
    • It will display a prompt asking if you want to update manually by browsing for drivers on the computer or an automatic update listed as search for updated drivers software
    • It is often better to search automatically so that windows can search and install the right drivers for your PC

    You can also download the drivers from your laptop’s manufacturer directly before installing them.

    Try to reset display output

    This method is pretty effective. Note that if display output is set wrongly, your PC will not recognize the TV connected to it.

    • After connecting your PC to TV using an HDMI cable, right-click on PC’s desktop and select Personalize > select Display [or Search for Display Settings if you don’t find this option] >> Select Advanced Display Settings on the display screen, you should see the connected TV displayed as a second monitor
    • If you can’t find your TV, press Windows key + P, then click Duplicate or Extend. After this, windows should be able to detect your TV.

    Install drivers in compatibility mode

    On Windows 10 laptops, you can do the following if laptop to TV HDMI no signal issue pops up.

    • Go to the official website of your PC’S manufacturer to download the latest driver for your PC
    • Find driver setup file, right-click on it to set it up
    • On the displayed screen, click Properties > Compatibility tab
    • In the compatibility tab, tick the box for Run this program in compatibility mode for, then in the tab beneath it, select Windows 10 and click Ok
    • You can then follow on-screen instructions to complete installation before restarting your PC

    Delete recently installed software or apps

    If your computer has been connecting to your TV without hassle before but suddenly develops this issue, try to remove any recently installed software. Sometimes, these issues are triggered by such a new installation.

    • Go to Start
    • In the search bar, type Control panel, then select programs recently added
    • Click Uninstall to get rid of them. Turn OFF and restart all devices and reconnect your TV and PC using HDMI cable before putting them back on to see if this will fix the issue

    Run Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter

    • In the search bar, type Troubleshoot Settings
    • Click Troubleshoot then select View all in the top left corner
    • Click on Hardware and Devices then follow on-screen instructions to run the troubleshooter
    • After troubleshooting, check to see if the issue is resolved by reconnecting the devices

    Any of these options should fix the laptop to TV HDMI no signal issue. But, if after trying all of these options it still does not work, you might need to contact tech support.
