Câu tường thuật [reported speech] không chỉ cơ bản mà còn rất nhiều cách sử dụng linh hoạt. King of English sẽ giúp các bạn hiểu rõ hơn về câu trực tiếp và gián tiếp qua bài viết sau.

- Trong câu gián tiếp, chúng ta thường gặp các trạng từ chỉ nơi chốn và thời gian được đặt cuối câu [here, this, today...]. Chúng ta cần thay đổi những trạng từ đó nếu chúng đã không còn chính xác nữa.

Ví dụ:  He said 'This is my house.'

1. He said this was his house. [Bạn đang nói và đứng trước căn nhà của anh ấy.]
2. He said that was his house. [Bạn đang nói nhưng không đứng trước căn nhà của anh ấy.]

Lưu ý: Cách nói giữ nguyên this như trên hoặc giữ nguyên bất kỳ trạng từ chỉ nơi chốn và thời gian nào khác chỉ thường được áp dụng trong văn nói. Văn viết chúng ta vẫn phải đổi.

- Như những gì đã học, chúng ta cần lùi thì khi tường thuật một câu nói nào đó nhưng nếu xem xét kỹ, trong 3 mốc thời gian, các thì tương lai đặc biệt hơn các thì quá khứ và hiện tại ở một điểm chính là "Will". Ở hiện tại, khi ta lùi xuống quá khứ, các động từ và trợ động từ điều được lùi theo.  Trong quy tắc lùi thì, chúng ta không được giảm bớt chữ nên khi lùi từ tương lai xuống quá hiện tại, chúng ta không được bỏ từ. Nhưng ở hiện tại, không hề có Will, nên nếu ta giữ will sẽ là sai và ta chỉ có thể lùi will thành would và giữ nguyên điều kiện hiện tại bên trong vế will.

- Trong câu gián tiếp, chúng ta thường gặp những động từ tường thuật như sau:

- Say là một trong 3 động từ tường thuật cơ bản chúng ta thường gặp và có công thức như sau:

Say[s]/Said + [that] + clause [Mệnh đề] / Say[s]/Said + to someone + [that] + clause [Mệnh đề]

Ví dụ: She said "She has eaten." => She said [that] She had eaten.

Tell/Told

- Tell là một trong 3 động từ tường thuật cơ bản chúng ta thường gặp và có công thức như sau:

Tell[s]/Told + someone + [that] + clause [Mệnh đề] / Tell[s]/Told + someone + to + V

Ví dụ: She said "I've seen the new film." => She told me [that] She had seen the new film.

Lưu ý: Ngoài say được dùng để diễn tả gián tiếp thì tell ngoài sử dụng cho câu mệnh lệnh, chúng ta cũng có thể sử dụng cho câu gián tiếp bình thương

Ask[s]/Asked

- Ask là động từ tường thuật cơ bản cuối cùng chúng ta thường gặp và có công thức như sau:

Ask[s]/Asked + someone + If/Wh- / Ask[s]/Asked + someone + to V

Ví dụ: She asked "Do you have my bag?" => She asked me if I had her bag.

Lưu ý: Ask có thể được thay thế bằng cụm Want to know hoặc Wonder.

Ví dụ: “Don’t play ball near the restricted area.” I said to the boy

=> I warned the boy not to play ball near the restricted area.

=> I warned the boy against playing ball near the restricted area.

Lưu ý: Warn someone against = Warn someone not to

- Câu trực tiếp dạng lời khuyên thường có dạng:

• S+ should/had better/ought to + V
• If I were you, I would + V... [If loại 2]
• Why dont you + V

Ví dụ 1: "You should drink more water" The doctor said to her

=> The doctor advised her to drink more water.

Ví dụ 2: "If I were you, I wouldn't buy that book" my friend said

=> My friend advised me not to buy that book.

- Câu trực tiếp dạng lời hứa thường có dạng:

Ví dụ: " I will never do this again " He said to her

=> he promised her not to do that again.

Ví dụ: Ann said: “Come to my place whenever you are free.”

=> Ann invited me to come to her place whenever I was free.

Ví dụ: He said " I will kill you if you don't do that "

=> He threatened to kill me if I didn't do that.

- Câu trực tiếp dạng cảm thán thường có dạng:

• What + a/an + adj +noun + [S + V]!

=> He exclaimed that they had a lovely garden.
Ví dụ 2: "How dreadful!" 

=> He exclaimed that it was dreadful.

Ví dụ: " Have a happy birthday" she said
=> She wished me a happy birthday.

Ví dụ: “I’m happy to know that you win the game. Congratulations!”, Jim said to Mary.
=> Jim congratulated Mary on winning the game.

Ví dụ: " Welcome to my house, my dear " she said to her friend
=> She welcomed her friend to her house.

Ví dụ: " You stole my bike ". He said
=> He accused me of stealing/having stolen his bike.

Ví dụ: Ann: "Would you wait half an hour.? " - Tom:" All right"
=> Tom agreed to wait.

Ví dụ: “I’ve made the wall dirty” said one student
=> One student admitted making the wall dirty.

Ví dụ: Peter said: “I didn’t steal the painting.”
=> Peter denied stealing the painting.

Ví dụ: Ann: "Would you lend me another £50? "Tom: " No, I won’t lend you any more money" .
=> Tom refused to lend her any more money.

Ví dụ: Tom said “ Let me pay for myself.
=> Tom insisted on paying.

Ví dụ: Ann said to her boss: “I’m sorry I’m late”
=> Ann apologized to her boss for being late.

Ví dụ: Daisy said: “I want to be a famous singer in the world.”
=> Daisy dreamed of being a famous singer in the world.

Ví dụ: “Try again” she said
=> She encouraged me to try again.

Ví dụ: My mother said: "I can't let you use the phone."
=> My mother prevented me from using the phone.

Câu trách mắng [sử dụng reproach]

Ví dụ: " It was your fault. You didn't tell the truth " She said
=> She blamed me for not telling the truth.

Ví dụ: " I think He stole that car " My friend said
=> My friend suspected him of stealing that car.

- Câu trực tiếp dạng gợi ý thường có dạng:Ví dụ: " Can I carry the bag for you " He said
=> he offered to carry the bag for me.

Ví dụ: " I wish I had visited her" said He
=> He regretted not having visited/ visiting her.

Ví dụ: You are always getting up late" My mother said
=> My mother complained about my getting up late.

Ví dụ: “Don’t forget to phone me this afternoon,” he said.
=> He reminded me to phone him that afternoon.

Ví dụ: " You shouldn't have made that mistake " the boss said to me
=> The boss criticized me for having made that mistake.

Ví dụ: "Thank you very for your help" She said to him.
=> She thanked him for his help.

Ví dụ: “Liar!”
=> He called me a liar.

Ví dụ: "Let's go to the cinema"

=> He suggested going to the cinema.

=> He suggested that we should going to the cinema.

Lưu ý: sử dụng offer nếu câu mang ý nghĩa 

- Chúng ta luôn học câu trực tiếp chỉ là câu đơn nhưng trong ngôn ngữ, chúng ta không giới hạn lời nói chỉ có 1 câu mà có thể từ 2 câu trở lên. Vậy chúng ta cần chuyển sang câu gián tiếp như thế nào?

- Chúng ta sử dụng because/so để làm liên từ

Ví dụ: “Don’t tell me to do that. I don’t like it “

=> He asked me not to tell him to do that because he did not like it.

- Chúng ta sử dụng and added that 

Ví dụ: “ I miss my mother. I will visit her tomorrow.”

=> She said that she missed her mother and added that she would visit her the next day.

- Chúng ta sử dụng chuyển mỗi vế về dạng gián tiếp một cách riêng biệt và nối nhau bằng chữ and.

Ví dụ 1: “This is my book. Don’t take it away.”

=> She said that was her book and told me not to take it away.

Ví dụ 2: “Tomorrow is my birthday. Do you remember that?”

=> She said that the next day was her birthday and asked me if I remembered that.

- Chúng ta lùi thì nhưng không bỏ chữ và vẫn giữ chữ if.

Ví dụ: He said” If I have much money, I’ll travel around the world.”

=> He said [that] If he had much money, he would travel around the world.

- Chúng ta không lùi thì, không bỏ chữ và vẫn giữ chữ if.

Ví dụ: ”If I had two wings, I would fly everywhere”,he said

=> He said If he had two wings, he would fly everywhere.
