DUBAI: The International Cricket Council [ICC] on Monday, announced a new format for the biggest ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2024, scheduled to be hosted in the West Indies and the United States of America [USA].
The record 20-team T20 World Cup will take place in two phases before the knockout stages.
In a press release, sent out by the ICC, the cricket governing body confirmed 12 teams already booked their spot in the forthcoming mega event.
“The top two teams in each of the four groups of five will move to a Super Eight phase, where the remaining sides will be split into two groups of four,” ICC stated.
“The top two in each group will then make their way to the semi-finals,” the statement added.
Consequently besides hosts USA and West Indies, Pakistan, India, South Africa, Netherlands, New Zealand, England, Australia and Sri Lanka booked their spot in the next edition of the T20 World Cup.
Meanwhile, the remaining better-ranked Afghanistan and Bangladesh also qualified for T20 World Cup 2024.
The remaining eight spots for the 2024 edition will be determined through regional qualifiers.
Two teams each will qualify from Africa, Asia, and Europe while one team each from the Americas and EAP regions will make their way into the global event.
It is pertinent to mention that England edged Pakistan by five wickets in T20 World Cup 2022 Final to lift their second title.

The 2024 edition of ICC men's T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA will be played in a new format as compared to the previous two tournaments, with 20 participating teams being divided into four groups of five side each.
As per ESPNCricinfo, with this, the first round that used to take before the Super 12 stage in 2021 and 2022 editions will now be done away with.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Eight stage, where all the teams will get divided into two groups of four each. The top two teams of these two groups will qualify for semifinal. Following this, the final will take place.
In the previous two editions of tournament in 2021 and 2022, the first round featured eight teams that came into the tournament through qualification and teams that finished between ninth and 12th position in previous T20 WC.
These eight teams were divided into two groups of four each. Top two teams from these two groups joined other teams in the Super 12 phase.
12 teams have qualified for the 2024 T20 World Cup. USA and West Indies attained automatically qualification as the hosts of the tournament. Reigning champions England, runners-up Pakistan, India, New Zealand, Australia, Sri Lanka, South Africa and Netherlands have also qualified after finishing within the top eight of the 2022 edition.
Afghanistan and Bangladesh are the other two teams who have qualified as they were the next-best teams in the ICC T20I rankings on the cut-off date of November 14.
Eight spots are still up for grabs and will be taken through the qualifiers.
England are the current T20 World Cup champions, having beaten Pakistan in the final in Melbourne on November 13. With this, they won their 2nd ICC T20 World Cup title.

The 2024 ICC T20 World Cup will be the ninth ICC Men's T20 World Cup with 20 teams taking part.[2]
